welcome to the family

Is this what a chicken welcoming party looks like? I snapped this photo back in the fall of 2021 as the kids spread wood shavings around the coop, preparing for the arrival of our seven new feathered friends.

Who’s who? On the top roosting bar you'll find our four Rhode Island Reds: Hot Shot, Chatty Cathy, Chickie Chickie, and Grumpy Chicken. Our three ISA Browns are standing below: Dandelion, Turtle, and Chrysanthemum (aka Chrissy).

The best part of having chickens is collecting fresh eggs. In warmer months we get about four to six a day, however, egg production drops off during winter. People often ask if we sell the extra eggs we get. Instead, we regularly gift them to neighbors, family members and friends.

Our hens lay most of their eggs before noon. It’s a good opportunity for the kids to spend time bonding with them. The chickens seem to enjoy their company too.

All smiles with Grumpy Chicken down below. Awww…

Making space in your life for the caring of others is a worthy endeavor…two-legged, four-legged and beyond.
